The Palomar Observatory is operated by Caltech and is home to five telescopes. Caltech faculty and student are actively pursuing research on a number of astronomical theses. The Palomar Observatory is open daily to the public. However, due to recent fires the roads can become impassable on rainy days. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing nature of the research, night-time visits are currently unavailable. It is possible to visit the 200-in Hale Telescope in its dome, dress warmly as it is kept at night-time temperatures 24/7. Special night-time events are available to Friends of the Palomar Observatory.
