I have been blessed with three sisters. I am the youngest of the family. We are quite spread out in age, yet we have developed good relationships as adults. My oldest sister was eighteen years old when I was born. Her children are closer to my age than she is. The next oldest is nine years older than I am and the sister that I am closest to both in age and relationship is five years older. She is the clown of the family. She is always making everyone laugh. She seems to light a up a room just by walking into it. She is great at telling stories, and she always seems to have plenty to tell.
This sister is always trying to make different craft items that she sees in magazines or at craft shows. Last year she was going to make each of us a snowman that was made from tube socks. We did each receive one that was very cute; however the first one she made turned out so funny that we were laughing so hard we were crying when she showed it to us.
She had seen the snowmen made from tube socks at a craft show. She examined it very closely to discover how it was made. The white tube socks are filled with rice. You then take cotton string, the kind that you would use to lace a turkey, and tie the sock in two places creating the body and head. Another string is tied at the top to keep the rice inside. The top is then cuffed over to create the hat. Small buttons are sewn on the front and small pieces of fabric are used for a scarf. Permanent marker is used to create the face. The tube socks that are used for this are children size. The rice settles enough in the bottom part so that the snowman sits by itself.
As soon as my sister left the craft show she wrote herself notes about how the snowmen were made. She then went to a discount store and found white boy’s socks on sale. She stopped and bought rice and string and went home to create her snowmen. When she filled the first sock with rice she thought is looked a bit odd, but she proceeded to tie it to create the body and head. She could not understand why the bottom of the snowman looked so strange. Her husband arrived home from work and looked at her creation. When she explained what it was suppose to be he commented that it would look better if she used tube socks. She had bought regular socks so the bottom looked odd due to the heel of the sock. I thought the funniest part of the story is that her husband knew what was wrong and he had not seen the one at the craft show.
