People who have mesothelioma are usually treated with radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or surgery. (See: mesothelioma case)
After surgery these are used together with chemo and radiation. If mesothelioma is found before it spreads, surgery may be an option.
Chemotherapy is designed to target and kill the cells that are afflicted by the mesothelioma. As with its use in the treatment of other forms of cancer, chemotherapy also kills healthy cells, causing the side effects that many people associate with the treatment. Although chemotherapy drugs had little effect in the past, new drugs have brought new hope.
To keep mesothelioma from spreading, radiation may be used. This technique is most often employed after surgery, although it can be used to alleviate pain on its own. Radiation generally results in short-term relief, but not long-term improvement.
