microsoft zune review
I was driven to publish this review because it is slightly unfavourable and, it seems to me, a bit unfair for the zune’s standard review rating to be hauled so far down by zune NON-OWNERS who, guessing from their remarks, seem to be quite worried by all of the positive remarks about a item that’s pricey, monochrome, not a general purpose media player, unable to leap tall buildings, or in some way less than they were expecting, wanting, or hoping. In contrast to non-owners, the people who actually HAVE zune’s seem to universally love it, though with very validated cautions. I microsoft zune reviewthink of this as “The TiVo Effect” since, for the right sort of user, the zune will be life-changing … but it for certain won’t be that for everyone. Although it took me a few hours to get wholly comfortable with it, I am now hooked.

For umpteen months I have been an wild reader of eBooks using well-nigh every eReading item on the market place. So as an early-adopter of tech gadgets I had been eagerly looking forward to Amazon’s zune since its introductory rumors. So I at once purchased it both out of curiosity and hoping for a greater “next generation” eBook answer. In case you’re questioning whether I’m “that” Stu Gibson, I plausibly am — I’m the girl who gets Google’s introductory six or six pages when Googling my name.

So, for what it’s worth, if this posting is noticed by any genuinely curious pre-purchasers, I hope that the coming commentary might place the zune in “perspective” and be of some use to you.

Thin Film Solar Panels and Solar Ink

What are thin film solar panels, and what could possibly be so exciting about them?

Thin film solar panels operate in the same manner that regular solar panels do, the only difference being that they are a lot thinner and require far less materials and energy for construction.

This might not sound extremely spectacular, but in fact it is. It’s a major breakthrough in solar technology.

Why are Thin Film Solar Panels so Important?

The reason thin film solar technology is considered to be such a major breakthrough is because, until now, the two barriers that have prevented solar energy and solar technology from becoming mainstream energy providers have been the 1. the cost to produce them, and 2. the problems in mass-producing them rapidly.

Both of these problems have been solved. This paves the way for rapid expansion of clean energy in the form of solar power.

What is Thin Film Solar Technology?

Thin film solar technology is a method of putting extremely thin films of photovoltaic material on to a thin layer of backing for support.

This is made possible through new inventions, such as Solar Ink. A photovoltaic material is dissolved into a solution, that is then printable as ink. It is then printed out, similarly to how books are printed.

Because of the invention of solar ink, it is possible to print photovoltaic material onto thin layers of plastic fabric or metal. This printing process is extremely fast, and thus it allows you to mass-produce solar panels at a high speed and at only a fraction of the cost.

Whereas, in the past, solar panels were bulky and weighed a serious amount, thin film solar panels weigh almost nothing and take up almost no space. This means that solar panels can now be produced at only 5 percent of the cost, as compared to our old bulky solar panels.

Uses of Thin Film Technology

The new possibility of literally printing solar panels onto materials such as fabric, plastic and metal, has opened up new doors in the application of solar power.

Some of the uses now possible are as follows:

  • Military, Police and Emergency Services:
  • Metal roofing Membrane roofing Architectural fabric
  • Water pumping systems
  • Solar-Powered Radios
  • Warning/safety lights
  • Handheld game chargers
  • Rollable solar chargers
  • Wildlife feeders
  • AA battery solar charger
  • Remote sensors and data transmitters
  • GPS chargers
  • Cell phone chargers
  • Solar field shelters
  • Weather stations
  • GPS asset tracking

The above are just some of the ways that solar power can be and is being used, with the advent of thin film solar panels. I am sure that many more uses will be added, now that the price and manufacturing barrier of solar power have been broken.

Security Camera Reviews - How To Cut Security Camera Costs

It’s easy to get confused about what direction to head in when doing your own security camera systems reviews but the point to remember, being excessive with security cameras is only going to hurt your bottom line.

What do we mean by being excessive? Simply over-capitalizing with your system is unnecessary and cameras should really be posted where they are needed. And basically, around a home, they are needed in those areas where intruders can enter someone’s home without being noticed. Unless they are extremely brazen, their first choice entry point will usually be an area which is hard to see from the neighbor’s home or in a dark spot hidden away from everyone.

A quick walk around your property can identify possible hidden areas and then you can plan your system around this. You should avoid looking at brands ahead of placement when doing your initial security camera reviews.

Reviews Of Security Camera Systems

You have some choices as to which security camera systems you may want to install. Depending on your budget and your needs, your security camera system can be as basic as a single camera pointed at your front door or it can be as complex as a series of cameras that all go to a bank of monitors or some sort of recording device.

There are many establishments that sell security camera systems. Spy shops are one of these. These spy shops specialize in security camera systems and some of them are quite ingenious.

James Bond?

If you visit a spy shop, you’ll see that they can put security camera systems throughout your home or business without anyone knowing they’re there. They can put a camera in a smoke detector, a clock, a pack of cigarettes, or anything else really. These types of systems are great if you want to catch a perpetrator off guard. However, if deterrence is your goal, you may want to go with a traditional camera that others can see.

Deterring Intruders

Security camera systems that are designed to keep perpetrators away make themselves very obvious. These are the types you see in gas stations and banks. They’re right there where anyone can see them, so that evil doers know that someone will be watching in case they decide to do something criminal.

Some reviews of security camera systems involve dummy or fake cameras, which are nothing more than an object made to look like a camera. They don’t record but they do a good job of making someone think that they do. They’re the cheapest bet when it comes to security camera systems but they won’t offer any evidence if anything bad does happen.

E-waste Disposal Practices And Consumer Electronics

Consumer electronics run the gambit from personal computers and mobile phones, to MP3 players, televisions and wireless services. What most do not think about when considering purchasing electronics is what they will do with them once they break or are no longer valuable.

Every year, the United States alone generates almost 3 million tons of commodity and electronic waste (or e-waste) from the disposal of obsolete, defective or damaged devices. Let’s have a look at what effects e-waste has on your health and the environment and where it ends up once it is tossed out.

bluetooth phones
Because of the difficulty and cost of recycling electronics, as well as spotty enforcement of legislation regarding e-waste exports, vast amounts of used electronics have been sent to countries such as China, Kenya and India.

Lower environmental standards and working conditions make processing e-waste more profitable yet dangerously hazardous in those countries. Being mindful of e-waste disposal is a big concern. There are facilities out there that specifically deal with this hazardous material correctly.

When mobile phones are handled and sorted properly, e-waste is a valuable source of secondary raw materials. However, they are a major contributor of toxins and carcinogens when clumsily treated.

cordless phone batteries
Fast paced technology changes, low initial cost and actual planned obsolescence have given way to a growing problem around the globe. Uncontrolled burning, disassembly without safety measures in place, and haphazard disposal practices are causing environmental and health problems.

Waste from consumer electronics like cordless phone batteries contains PCBs, cadmium, mercury and lead. Those substances are highly toxic and carcinogenic. When carelessly handled, they can contaminate our food and water supply and enter our food chain.

Burning of these products causes toxic fumes to be emitted. This furthers the depletion of the ozone, as well as creating the potential of inhalation by humans and animals. PCBs have been shown to cause cancer, while cadmium, lead and mercury affect the central nervous system, which can cause cell damage and renal failure.

wireless services
Think about it the next time you indiscriminately throw away those cordless phone batteries or that camcorder that is older than your parents. Don’t forget that cordless phone batteries contain acid and lead and will also need to be disposed of properly. Consumer electronics contain cadmium, lead, mercury and PCBs.

With the potential for mercury, cadmium and lead leaching into the soil and contaminating the food chain, as well as PCB exposure causing cancer, some thoughtful consideration of use, reuse and disposal of consumer electronics is essential.

Alternative Energy | Solar Cells

A solar cell is a device which changes sunlight into electricity. More technically, a solar cell can also be referred to as a photovoltaic cell.

The term “photo” derives from the Greek word for “light,” and the term “voltaic” comes from the word “volt” which means “electrical force.” A “cell” is a small receptacle or container containing electrodes which generate power.

Thus, a photovoltaic cell is a container that creates electric force, through light.

Whereas a solar cell can generate electricity from any light source, its intended use is the collection of solar energy from the sun.

How a Solar Cell Works

The solar cell works as follows:

Photons (which are particles of light in sun rays) hit the surface of the solar cell and are absorbed a semiconductor, such as silicon.

These photons (bits of sunlight) knock electrons loose from the atoms inside the semiconductor. The photons then push the electrons along, leaving a “gap” in the atom. Another electron is then pulled from an adjacent atom to fill the gap. And so an electrical flow is generated.

The simplicity of this is that one atom has an extra electron, and the other atom is missing one. This is referred to as a “difference in potential.” Nature, wanting to remain balanced, tries to even things out by pulling another electron from the neighboring atom.

A solar panel is comprised of a group of solar cells which are linked together to produce the desired amount of electrical energy.

A group of solar cells linked together can also be referred to as a “module.” Thus the terms “solar panel,” and “solar module,” are synonymous to each other. Essentially, they mean the exact same thing. “Solar panel” is the more common term, and “solar module” is the technical term.

One can use solar panels individually or one can link several together in order to generate more electricity. When a group of solar panels are linked together, it is called a “solar array”. The more solar panels are contained in a solar array, the more power they produce.

Solar Power is a clean and virtually unlimited source of energy. I say “virtually unlimited” because the sun itself won’t last forever. But we won’t have to worry about that for the next few billion years.

Since solar power is a clean energy source which has been around for decades, one might wonder why its not used more. The answer to this lies partially in the cost of producing solar panels, as well as in the efficiency of the solar panels.

We are currently in the second generation of solar panel technology and verging on the third. A lot has changed since the first generation. Solar panels a are becoming a viable source of clean energy.

The solar cells of earlier times were relatively large and bulky compared to our current models. In view of the amount of energy and material required to produce them, and the amount of energy they actually produced, using solar energy was more costly than using fossil fuels. The only exception was in places where little or no fossil fuels were available, such as in space.

With the second-generation solar cells, we attempted to tackle this exact problem. We attempted improve manufacturing techniques so as to reduce the costs, materials and energy needed for the production of solar cells.

Recently, major advances have been made in the production of solar cells. These advances have reduced production costs.

One contribution made to area was the development of techniques to coat glass or ceramic materials with very thin layers of semi-conductive substances. This made it possible to produce solar panels using only a fraction of the semi-conductive material that was required earlier. The production of solar panels using this second-generation technology is referred to as “Thin Film Technology.” (See Solar Ink for more information.)

Third-generation solar energy technologies are currently being researched and developed. The objective is to improve the power of solar cells even further (while keeping production costs to a minimum) in which case thirty to sixty percent of the sunlight hitting the panels will be converted into electricity. (Currently, solar panels convert only about twenty percent.)

But regardless of third generation solar technology, the second-generation solar cell is efficient enough to make solar technology viable - and a host of new solar-powered products have hit the consumer market.

Solar-powered calculators have been in use for a while now, we’ve all seen them. We have even seen a few other novelty devices hit the market. But its only in the last few years that solar devices have come into serious and practical use.

The last two years in particular have seen a virtual explosion of solar devices hitting the market. Solar flashlights (I’ve often wandered what use they were), solar-powered radios, and, recently, solar battery chargers.

One can also now find a wide range of portable solar chargers and Solar Panels, which are lightweight and easy to transport, yet capable of providing a decent amount of power in even the most remote locations. Solar chargers are becoming a standard part of wilderness survival kits and emergency preparedness kits.

All of this is a result of the developments in solar cell technology, and the coming of the Solar Age.

Play Games On Giant Panasonic Plasma

Guys, you may want to cover your eyes for this bit of information. The plasma TV was not developed by men wanting a better viewing experience for their favorite sports. There, the truth has been let out of the bag, so to speak. It is incredible that the plasma based viewing device is not a new idea. It has been around for quite some time. Perhaps a bit of a history lesson is in order for you to understand how this application came to be available for the masses.

It all began in 1964 at the University of Illinois. At this time, computer monitors were simple televisions. You have to realize that the televisions at this time were cathode ray tubes.

panasonic plasma
They had to continuously refresh themselves in order to display correctly. That was a big problem when using a television as a computer monitor. Sure it was okay for watching tv shows, but the resolution for computers was terrible. By the end of the year the first plasma monitor was in operation.

Today’s plasma [uc]tv[/uc] has millions of cells that comprise the color and resolution of the screen. That initial plasma monitor was only one cell. However, it was still a step in the right direction. There was a set back, though. Liquid crystal displays became the more acceptable method and plasma technology was put on hold. Fast forward a few years and large flat screen sets became widely popular.

panasonic plasma tv
Where would the world be without technology constantly pushing it forward? Sure a plasma TV did not put man on the moon or allow for cell cloning, but it was a huge development at the time and has greatly affected the economy. Three years ago a plasma television 42 inch wide was considered only for the rich and famous. Today, many consumers can now afford to own one of the best plasma television technological marvels.

Thank you scientists at the University of Illinois for bringing men and women everywhere the ability to watch games on a plasma TV. Where would technology be if necessity had not demanded you devise a new computer monitor? Time can only tell what new marvels scientists will come up with next in their quest for the bigger, better and more colorful boob tube.

Home Security Cameras - What You Ought To Know About Home Security Cameras

There seems to be a misconception that cameras for home security may be a waste of time because they don’t have the ability to stop a crime from happening. That’s true in a physical sense but yes, they can stop crimes from happening and do so every day.

The power of security home cameras lies in the fact they are effective as a deterrent. When people know they are there then there persona seems to change. When you know you’re being watched how do you behave. From an intruder’s point-of-view, it may seem foolhardy to break into a home with security camera coverage when there are those homes without them.

Can you see the deterrent for intruders here? Many home owners actually like to make it known they have security camera coverage simply because intending intruders will look for easier pickings. So yes, security home cameras can definitely play a major part in crime prevention.

Home Security Cameras

There are many different types of home security cameras but one choice you have to make is which type to buy regarding how it records. Motion sensor home security cameras only begin recording when they sense movement.

This is great for a security camera because it will only catch the footage if someone breaks into your home. If you have pets, however, this could become a problem because the home security cameras can’t differentiate between the family dog and a would be burglar.

The home security cameras that record all the time are also great cameras. These record constantly, meaning they will catch anything and everything that goes on within its range of vision. The problem with these types of security cameras is that, if something does happen, you’re going to have to rewind through all that tape in order to find the part that includes the break in. However, a constant recording home security camera can make you feel safer because there’s no question as to whether it caught anything or not.

If you do fall victim to a home invasion, you can then take the footage that you gleaned from your home security camera and you can take it right to the police. It might be a good idea, for extra security, to have several security home cameras placed throughout your home. You should have one facing each entry way and maybe one in the living room, or anywhere else where you keep lots of valuables like TVs and other electronics.

You can’t be everywhere at once but it’s nice to know that a security camera is constantly keeping an eye on things while you’re gone.

Rc Scale Planes - Find Out More About Rc Jet Planes

Whilst there is a wide range of different rc scale planes, the rather helpful thing about model planes is that they are clearly distinguishable into different categories, models of planes which are best suited for novices and hobbyists are clearly set apart from those types best suited for experts. rc model jet airplanes are the top at the model plane range, premium in terms of their quality, cost, and level of skill required to successfully operate them.

RC model jet airplanes are made of much more sturdy and durable materials and typically are constructed using fibre glass, carbon fibre, and it should ne noted that such models are very very expensive, with the high costs only matched by the steep learning curve required to successfully operate them. The jet plane models are then supported by means of a wooden frame, which acts as the “skeleton” for the plane, keeping it firm and sturdy.
One of the reasons that they are so demanding on the skills and technical ability of the pilot is that these models have been reported to reach speeds in excess of 200 mph, and that with the most “basic” of rc model jet airplanes, a level of speed that will require tremendous amounts of skill, precision and concentration. Given the powerful nature of the rc model jet airplanes, the US government has outlawed their use within certain specified areas such as residential areas.

The reason as to why the rc model jet airplanes are so powerful lies within their engine. The typically use a micro turbine or ducted fan in order to more effectively power them, and such engines are actually a scaled down version of the types found in commercial aircraft, which should hopefully make more evident the phenomenal power these rc model jet airplanes have. An average turbine aircraft will cost between $5000-$20,000 and many manufactures sell airframes such as Yellow Aircraft and Skymasters, which are viewed as the premium brands among the jet plane models. Please note that whilst there are electrical models of these planes, the vast majority make use of Kevlar fuel tanks which make use of kerosene which burns for only a matter of seconds in order to give the plane that extra degree of power for lift off.

Suffice to say they are best left to experts, and are not a glorified toy!

Cassette Phone Recorder Thing Of The Past

You probably don’t want to buy a phone recorder that uses cassettes if this is your first recorder and you’re not tied to legacy equipment in your office. If you are tied to what you’ve used before, of course you’ll need to buy something compatible with your current system.

Assuming you’re free to buy whatever you want, you will probably do better with a digital telephone recorder, for several reasons.

First, cassette recorders have very limited storage capacity. The largest capacity tapes will only hold sixty minutes per side, which used to be a lot, but is miniscule compared to digital recording devices that can hold dozens or even hundreds of hours of conversations.

One of the problems with the limited storage on tapes is that if you need to archive them, you have to store the physical tapes. When you record with a digital phone recorder, all you have to store is small audio files. You can store them on your computer or CD, and catalog them according to whatever system you choose.

Digital files are extremely durable. You can copy them repeatedly with no quality loss, and they don’t degrade with use. With a cassette, you’ll need to keep the master to make copies, and each time it’s played it will lose a small amount of quality.

Digital recorders are also, in general, easier to use. You don’t have to keep tapes around, they require less fussing with, no turning over of tapes or rewinding, and they’re generally less hassle than cassette recorders.

So, to answer the original question, unless you have a very good reason for choosing a cassette telephone recorder over digital, the answer is, no, you probably shouldn’t go with a cassette device. Digital recording devices offer so many advantages that it is hard to justify buying a cassette recorder these days.
